About

I am an ethnomusicologist who specializes in music history of the Persian-speaking Near East.  My primary research focuses on the history of music in Iran and comparative analysis between Persian, Arabic, and Turkic music culture. I have also done ethnographic fieldwork on music in Iran, and on Iranian music in Los Angeles.  As a teacher, I am able to work with a wide variety of world music traditions and research methods in the classroom. I teach both ethnographic and historiographic research methods, and give my students opportunities to pursue both types of research on music in the local community. My teaching to date has encompassed primarily undergraduates and mixed courses for undergraduates and graduates. I will teach my first graduate seminar for both M.A. and doctoral students in the Spring of 2012. My student advising to date has included both lower and upper division undergraduates, as well as MA and DMA students interested in doing doctoral work in ethnomusicology. I am a strong believer in academic service and have already held positions within the Society of Ethnomusicology while also organizing for the Middle East Studies Association and the International Society for Iranian Studies.

In addition to being an academic, I am also an avid music performer. I perform both Persian and Arabic music using different versions of the nay, a reed flute that exists in the Middle East in several different variations. I have performed in many different ensembles in Los Angeles and am currently working to create a new Middle East Ensemble for Brandeis.

You can find more information about my research, teaching, performance experience, and service in my curriculum vitae, found under the menu option "CV". I have also two publications (one forthcoming) under the option "Papers". I will post additional publications in the coming year.
